Winter Itchiness is Driving Me Crazy

Moisturizing Legs

So the air is getting colder and you can't wait to get home and take a long hot shower or bath. The heater is giving you warm rooms you may even have a fire going. You jump into the shower or bath after a long day at work and you turn on the hot water and don't want to get out. When you do finish you feel refreshed and clean. You put on your cozy PJ's and then you realize that you are suffering from winter itch. Itchy, dry, flaky, chapped, cracking skin, and you just want to scratch.

The big question is how do you stop it and manage it?

  • Start by using a humidifier or consider adding a system to your existing heating system to add humidity to the air. If you have a humidifier remember to change the water and disinfect often. Humidity in your air will help reduce dryness.

  • Moisturizers that have oil as a basis help a lot. Use cream moisturizer instead of lotion it works better in the winter and cold months.

  • Decrease the length of time spent in hot baths or showers. Limit time in hot water to 10 minutes or less.

  • Use warm water instead of hot.

  • Try to find soap that has a built in moisturizer. Soap should have no alcohol and should not be antibacterial soap as these 2 things add to dryness.

  • When drying off, don't rub hard.

  • Put your moisturizer on when your skin is still moist. You can even use a in shower body lotion.
